Orphans

An orphan web page is a web page that is not linked from any other web pages in a given website.

Preventing Orphans

AVEVA actively tries to prevent orphan pages on its websites.

Listing Search template and List component are used to create pages that generate a list of child pages within a site section so that they will not be orphans.

These pages are not meant for users to land on, but rather are for search engines to be able to find all the indexable pages in the AVEVA websites.

Listing pages are created for these site sections with large numbers of pages:

  • Press releases
  • Products
  • All sub-site sections under the /perspectives/ taxonomy
  • Our Industrial Life articles, podcasts, and opinions

Occasionally, press releases and pages with /perspectives/ in the URL are identified as orphans. The solution is to republish the Listing page and ensure the item is added as a link on the page.

Any other page type identified as an orphan should be linked from another AVEVA web page.

Monitoring for Orphan Pages

AVEVA uses Oncrawl to locate indexable orphan pages.
