Agenda 2030: announcing our pledges to realize sustainable industries of the future

Posted: July 1, 2021

To meet the Paris Targets, global carbon emissions must fall by 50% in the next nine years. Yet, between 2009 and 2019, average emissions rose by 1.5% per year. New research from PwC’s Net Zero Economy Index, shows that a decarbonization rate of 11.7% is required to keep warming within 1.5°C. To get there, countries with the highest rate of decarbonization in 2019 will need to double their efforts moving forward, and those with the lowest rate may need up to a 10x improvement.

At AVEVA, we are committed to continuing to help lead sustainable innovation to address these challenges. We are taking action to embed sustainability into our operations, our culture and our core business strategy. We're not alone in this – recent research we conducted shows that nine in ten industrial businesses also recognize that committing to lower emissions is their responsibility, and they are investing to drive further sustainability performance in the next three years as an urgent priority.

Announcing AVEVA’s Agenda 2030

We aspire to lead by example, so I'm delighted that today we launch our new Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) vision and supporting framework. This sets the direction we will take to drive sustainability throughout our own operations, our culture and through the software we develop. We think about this in terms of our handprint, our footprint and our inclusive culture.

Today, it is my pleasure to announce tangible targets in the form of two new, enterprise-wide sustainability pledges as part of our 2030 Agenda:

  • Net Zero Operations – We commit to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across our operations by 2030. We are setting a 1.5°C-aligned emission reduction targets for our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. We are submitting our targets to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for validation before the end of the fiscal year.
  • Advancing Women in Technology – We pledge to advance greater equality by committing to a set of goals that help drive greater representation of women in AVEVA’s workforce. Specifically, by 2030, 30% of our leadership roles and 40% of our management roles will be held by women, and we will increase representation in hiring to 50% for women.

This is just the beginning. We are continuing to formalize our sustainability goals across other focus areas as well as develop interim targets to help us report and communicate on our progress. We are off to a good start with our ESG performance already being recognized by the FTSE4GOOD Index Series, which AVEVA has been a constituent of since 2017. We’re also preparing to expand on our climate disclosure by reporting to CDP and completing a readiness assessment to support us with aligning to the recommendations of the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures.

Our handprint – our biggest opportunity

We are accelerating our efforts to grow our technology handprint, because this is where we believe we have the biggest opportunity to have a global impact. For example, we provide real-time data and predictive analytics that enhances operational efficiency helping our customers to reduce energy consumption and emissions across a variety of industries.

Our strong presence in nine diverse industry sectors from energy to manufacturing provide us with a significant opportunity to help enable the global transition to a lower-carbon energy system. Our solutions are also being used to drive progress on meeting the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges, as set out in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

As an example of how our software helps contribute to Global Goal eleven, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Nava Raipur, India’s first new-build smart city, uses AVEVA’s Unified Operations Center to streamline city operations, minimize risk, and lower the total cost of operating the city’s infrastructure. Nava Raipur was also designated a lighthouse for the Indian Government’s National Smart Cities Mission, establishing it as a model for other cities to follow. Now in two other cities, Namchi and Kohima, our software powering new community monitoring, advancing optimization, improving safety, supporting reliable services and enabling these cities thrive

As we expand on our sustainability pledges with additional metrics and governance measures, I look forward to sharing more details. More information abour our approach to corporate climate leadership and diversity, equity and inclusion will also be available in our upcoming sustainability report, which will be published this Fall.
