Presentation: Implementing Conservation Voltage Reduction

2020 - OSIsoft PI World - San Francisco - Transmission and Distribution

Implementing Conservation Voltage Reduction

Consumers Energy recently filed a Clean Energy Plan as a framework to help reshape Michigan’s energy future. One aspect of that plan is reducing customer energy usage not only during peak demand days but throughout the year as a means of reducing network losses. Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) is a way to optimize distribution system voltage to reduce energy demand on our system without requiring customer participation. Based on load flow studies using smart meter data and SCADA readings from our PI systems, a determination for voltage reduction on the substation regulator will be made. Optimizing the circuit will reduce energy demands on the system while ensuring each customer still receives the necessary voltage within the nominal range. Both our Smart Meter PI System and our Electric SCADA PI Historian have been the enablers for CVR.
