Cameron LNG, a leading LNG exporter on the U.S. Gulf Coast, faced challenges with manual data collection and limited field visibility. By digitizing operations using AVEVA™ Mobile Operator, the AVEVA™ PI System™ portfolio, including AVEVA™ PI Server and AVEVA™ PI Vision™, and wireless sensors, the company created a connected workforce and real-time insights. This transformation improved productivity, safety, and decision-making while avoiding significant instrumentation costs.
Challenges
Operators lost 30–60 minutes daily traveling to and from the field to access data or confirm information.
Manual data collection and delayed entry reduced accuracy and slowed decision-making.
Lack of cost-effective field instrumentation limited visibility into operational performance and safety.
Results
Increased operator efficiency with more time on tools and reduced travel
Improved safety through better incident reporting, faster observations, and mobile-enabled hazard management
Higher quality data for maintenance, production optimization, and environmental reporting
Avoided millions in potential instrumentation costs by deploying wireless sensor solutions at a fraction of the price
Accelerated decision-making by democratizing operational data across the enterprise
Improved efficiency by enabling cross-functional teams to share best practices and access a unified and real-time view of plant conditions
A modern LNG facility with a connected worker environment
Cameron LNG is a world-scale liquefied natural gas export facility in Louisiana and has rapidly become a key player in the U.S. Gulf Coast LNG market, delivering its 1,000th cargo in 2025. They began operations with a vision to build a modern LNG facility, equipped with a digital backbone to scale. With three trains capable of producing 13.5 MTPA of LNG, efficiency and reliability were critical. Yet, operators in the field often faced barriers to accessing data, which caused inefficiencies. A 30- to 60-minute daily loss per operator from walking back to the office to retrieve or validate data added up to significant productivity drains.
The company’s leadership recognized that in an OPEX-driven business model—focused on power, people, and production—digital solutions were essential to streamline operations and protect margins. By adopting AVEVA Mobile Operator and expanding its AVEVA PI System architecture, Cameron LNG created a resilient connected worker environment.
We knew that if we could bring data directly into the hands of our operators, and bring field data seamlessly into enterprise systems, we could radically improve efficiency, safety, and decision-making.

Solution
Cameron LNG digitized field operations with AVEVA Mobile Operator, the AVEVA PI System portfolio, including AVEVA PI Server and AVEVA PI Vision, and low-cost wireless industrial sensors, creating a connected worker environment powered by private LTE infrastructure.
Meet Cameron LNG’s new digital control room
Cameron LNG deployed a private LTE network using CBRS spectrum to deliver high-speed wireless connectivity across its 1x3 mile facility. This network became the backbone for AVEVA Mobile Operator, enabling handheld devices rated for Class 1 Div 2 hazardous environments. Operators could now perform structured rounds, collect non-networked instrument data, and raise maintenance requests directly in SAP without returning to the office.
The mobile solution also integrated with AVEVA PI System, creating real-time visibility of operations. The workforce quickly adapted to the new tools and appreciated that the digital experience matched what they already used in daily life.
By 2024, each operator at Cameron LNG had a dedicated mobile device. The solution now extends into safety observations, incident reporting via Enablon mobile apps, and integration with future electronic permit-to-work systems.
Our operators are engaged because they see immediate value. They can capture photos, log incidents, and sync directly into maintenance and AVEVA PI System without delay.

From reactive firefighting to proactive decision-making
Beyond operator rounds, Cameron LNG turned to AVEVA PI System and Seeq analytics to address long-standing visibility challenges. Traditional instrumentation was costly to install in a large LNG facility, limiting situational awareness. To overcome this, the company deployed LoRaWAN wireless sensors—low-cost, low-power devices that transmitted temperature, vibration, valve position, and weather data directly into AVEVA PI System.
With ~70,000 PI tags and over 5,000 asset framework elements in its AVEVA PI Server, Cameron LNG built a rich operational data layer. AVEVA PI Vision dashboards democratized DCS graphics, giving engineers, maintenance teams, and decision-makers the same window into real-time plant conditions. This approach enabled advanced use cases such as correlating ambient weather with heat exchanger performance, tracking manual valve positions for safety, and reducing monthly vibration monitoring rounds on fin fan motors.
One installation unlocks multiple opportunities. By layering wireless data infrastructure with AVEVA PI System, we have avoided millions in potential costs while opening the door to safer, smarter operations.

Why sustainability starts in the control room
The digital journey at Cameron LNG was not only about technology but also about change management. Early projects demonstrated measurable benefits, helping build trust and adoption across the workforce. For example, operators quickly saw how mobile devices reduced wasted time and improved reporting. Engineers valued the analytics insights that the AVEVA PI System infrastructure unlocked.
Leadership emphasized a pragmatic approach: prove success with working solutions, then scale. This philosophy helped overcome challenges related to limited implementation expertise and the broader industry shortage of digital LNG talent.
As Cameron LNG looks to the future, it continues to expand its digital platform with Seeq for engineering analysis, electronic shift logbooks, and electronic permit-to-work systems. Its collaborative approach with technology providers like AVEVA ensures sustained improvements in efficiency, safety, and competitiveness.
