Highview turned innovation into scalability
Highview is at the forefront of the renewable energy transition. The company stores excess electricity—often from wind or solar—by turning air into a liquid, then releases that energy later when demand is high or generation is low. This allows renewable energy to be used when it’s needed, not just when it’s produced. This helps to provide grid stability, which is particularly important as more solar and wind capacity is brought online.
Highview is turning energy-storage innovation into a repeatable, scalable model—accelerating delivery, reducing risk, and making renewable energy reliable for a net-zero grid.
To accelerate its growth plans, Highview required flexible, scalable digital tools that could enable its engineers to model the full life cycle of its infrastructure development—from design and procurement through to operations.
Build effectively and repeat
Having secured funding for the construction of its initial facility, Highview quickly announced plans to develop four additional larger plants. The company subsequently faced some challenges:
- It needed a cost-effective, scalable solution to optimize materials, procurement, and supply chain management.
- Management required early visibility of project challenges.
- The whole system had to be able to scale quickly to keep pace with Highview’s ambitious growth goals.
We really need to be able to take the learnings quite quickly into the next four assets. What we are looking for is engineering solutions, that capture learnings, standardisation, operational effectiveness and repeatability.
The company partnered with AVEVA to create an integrated digital environment—streamlining design, procurement, operations, and supply chain management.
As a result, the team benefited from:

Uniper turned complexity into reliability
Uniper is a European energy company with global reach and operations in more than 40 countries. It has about 7,500 employees and plays a key role in ensuring a secure energy supply in Europe. Uniper’s 14 gigawatts of flexible power generating capacity make it a mainstay of reliable power production.
As a leading gas trader and one of Northwestern Europe’s most important LNG importers, its broad procurement portfolio enhances supply security. Uniper is also Germany’s largest operator of gas storage facilities and hydropower plants. Remote sites and disparate systems made data management and understanding a big challenge.
Data had to be collected from multiple local systems—a time-consuming process, which was not sustainable. Uniper had to equip operators with trusted and reliable data on a timely basis, to enable issues to be identified and addressed quickly.

Integrating disconnected data to create a solid foundation
Uniper needed to achieve three key improvements:
- Enhance data quality by eliminating manual data input into multiple systems and integrating information into a single view
- Increase efficiency by reducing the time required to collect and aggregate data
- Improve collaboration across the business through the sharing of approved, reliable data
Accelerating decision-making through quality-assured data
Leveraging AVEVA software, the team created an integrated data framework with built-in quality control and transparency. Uniper now has a robust solution for accelerating decision-making based on data-driven insights.
Now, Uniper has:

- No more manual data correction within Excel Sheets.

There is a commercial as well as an operational benefit of centralizing the data and making sure all the different teams can access it much quicker. Before, you looked at a dataset, completely siloed, without any quality control, and it took much, much longer to process the data and really work with it. So, we have a performance improvement and are much quicker when it comes to making decisions.
Within a highly regulated industry, Uniper has harnessed its Industrial Intelligence to ensure reliable energy and enable transparency of its operations.
AGL Energy turned complexity into clarity
AGL is an integrated energy company producing energy from thermal power, natural gas, wind power, hydroelectricity, solar energy, gas storage, coal and battery storage across Australia.
In nine years, AGL’s power capacity grew from 300 to over 10,000 megawatts of electricity generation. As a result, the company saw overwhelming growth in its data.
However, this additional power capacity produced diverse data flows, with information held in many unconnected, incompatible systems. This made it much more challenging for AGL’s leadership team to get a complete view of operations, and for the field teams to manage vast new volumes of renewable energy, flowing into the grid.
Divided data makes insight impossible
The team needed high-resolution data to optimize operational performance, especially with aging infrastructure. They also needed to consolidate multiple SCADA technologies into one system. The team identified three key steps they needed to undertake:
- To give teams across the organization access to real-time data and insights to improve accuracy of decision-making.
- Expand from real-time awareness to predictive modelling to prevent lost time incidents.
- Share power generation data securely with partners, optimizing usage across distributed power generation sites.
Using AVEVA™ PI System™ and CONNECT, AGL centralized its time-series information from every generation site, unifying and visualizing that data into a dashboard where they could both understand operational performance and apply industrial AI in order to predict and prevent outages.
Now, the whole team benefits from integrated intelligence, spanning the entire value chain: each individual has secure access to near-real-time data; everyone is empowered to make changes that can improve many aspects of business performance.
What came along was a solution that really fit what we needed and that was [AVEVA™ PI System™]. It could connect to any one of our controllers. We could harvest every piece of real-time data and make it available to every person at AGL.
Saving AU$10 million each year
By using CONNECT to harness industrial intelligence, AGL has saved approximately 6-10 million AUD per year in avoided failures via Advanced Pattern Recognition diagnostics.
The team has also cut data capture time from 10 minutes to 1 second across 200 wind turbines, helping optimize performance. This led to a ROI payback of 4 months and enhanced efficiency as a result.
Now, real-time wind power generation data from turbines can also be shared securely with AGL’s university partners to drive further optimizations.
