Bausch + Ströbel turned data into differentiation
Bausch + Ströbel is a leading global manufacturer of filling and packaging equipment used in the pharmaceutical industry.
Precision is paramount in pharmaceutical packaging. One unplanned stop can lead to the loss of an entire production batch. However, many filling lines on the market today are not equipped with live data sensors, meaning it is hard to understand the status of machines in use, increasing the risk of unplanned downtime.
These machines aren't often specified or requested by our customers to be equipped to measure vibration data, which also means that they're missing out on a lot of data that can help in generating actionable insights when you contextualize it with machine information.
To address this challenge, Bausch + Ströbel partnered with Brüel & Kjær Vibro - a specialist in condition monitoring solutions - to develop a digital system that offered condition-monitoring-as-a-service so that they could:
- Enable comprehensive data monitoring across pharmaceutical filling lines
- Reduce the risk of batch loss by preventing unplanned machine stops
- Enhance maintenance capabilities by supplementing decreasing in-house expertise with real-time smart monitoring and data-driven decision support
Empowering Customers To Make Better Decisions
Bausch + Ströbel and Brüel & Kjær Vibro turned to AVEVA software to provide the tech foundation for this new service. Using a combination of AVEVA™ PI System™, CONNECT, and AVEVA™ Advanced Analytics, the solution allows combined vibration and machine data to be gathered by sensors and shared with customers. Measuring this data is critical to asset health, enabling early fault detection, prevention of failures, and optimization of maintenance. Customers benefit from timely, actionable insight, leading to more informed decision-making.
Creating Customer Value Through Innovation
Together, Bausch + Ströbel, Brüel & Kjær Vibro, and AVEVA have developed a solution that:
- Is simple, scalable, and non-intrusive to the machines and their core function
- Produces data insights that can be used to optimize maintenance cycles, cut unplanned shutdowns, and boost productivity for customers
- Has generated €590,000 in potential savings by preventing one unplanned 15-hour shut-down in a single asset
Our vision was to rethink how condition monitoring is delivered…With CONNECT, we enable true data collaboration: instead of flying maintenance engineers around, we let the data travel. We combine vibration and machine data to generate actionable insights that save time, reduce manual effort, and improve reliability right from the start.
In partnership with Brüel & Kjær Vibro, Bausch + Ströbel has unlocked the power of Industrial Intelligence to develop a differentiated condition monitoring service which opens-up incremental revenue and provides substantial additional value to its customers.
Sanofi turned uncertainty into reliability
Sanofi is a global life sciences and healthcare leader, focused on helping improve patient outcomes by delivering reliable access to critical medicines. Asset reliability is critical for the company to maintain consistent, high-quality production, while remaining compliant with regulations.
Our job is to ensure that we have a reliable supply that is maintained through our production… The function of reliability is to ensure we have a good balance, do the right kind of maintenance and ensure we have the capabilities and capacity.
Sanofi faced three key challenges which were causing it to typically take 4-7 days to identify an issue and narrow down the root cause of a problem:
- Disparate data sources and manual processes leading to lack of essential basic information on equipment
- Challenges in acquiring parts for its legacy plant, and often needing engineering experts to guide repairs
- Aging assets and time-based maintenance strategy
From understanding to impact
Before making any changes to processes or maintenance, Sanofi needed to understand the condition of its assets and how they typically operated. The company baselined every asset in the production facility to ensure it had data for different modes, operating conditions, and phases of operation.
The company then turned to AVEVA software, integrated with Quantic.Ai to adopt a reliability-centered maintenance approach to improve equipment performance, as well as maintenance workflow and spend.
Combining the power of integrated data, anomaly detection modelling, and advanced predictive analytics, Sanofi has achieved the following results:
- Reduced preventative maintenance costs by 25%
- Reduced cost of goods sold
- Gained productivity hours and upskilled engineering teams
Having successfully integrated their industrial data, predictive models and IoT solutions, Sanofi is aiming for a global rollout and a consistent prescriptive maintenance model.
We will be leveraging what technology is out there to make our processes a little more streamlined, a little more automated, and get the most out of what is available to us.
By harnessing its Industrial Intelligence, Sanofi has built the foundations for best-in-class asset reliability to reduce both random equipment failures and costs of maintenance.
Pfizer turned timesaving into lifesaving
Pfizer relentlessly pursues breakthroughs that change patients’ lives, and its teams drive innovation to make the world a healthier place. This dedication shone brightest when the call came for the COVID-19 vaccine.
With the world waiting, Pfizer embarked on compressing the vaccine development timeline from nine years to nine months. Achieving this required re-invention and feats of innovation in science as well as data management and process optimization.
Having already embarked on a digital transformation journey with AVEVA, Pfizer understood the transformative potential of standardized and centralized data management to unlock benefits throughout its value chain.
When COVID-19 emerged, Pfizer swiftly leveraged these established practices to accelerate the vaccine project, recognizing the pivotal role of AVEVA software in this endeavor.
We were convinced that science would win, and how data and the AVEVA™ PI System™ would be an important part of that victory.
Innovating at the speed of light
Pfizer streamlines operations, facilitates collaboration, and accelerates decision-making across its network by centralizing and standardizing data collection and analysis.
The AVEVA™ PI System™ serves as the cornerstone of Pfizer's Global Historian Program, providing real-time, full data visibility and control over its manufacturing processes.
This optimizes Pfizer’s operations, supports the transfer and sharing of data, empowers collaboration between different sites, and enables rapid adaptability.
The data foundation enabled by the AVEVA™ PI System™ allows for the monitoring of critical parameters, such as temperature control in freezer farms, mRNA concentration in vaccine batches, and production scheduling for capacity modeling and the removal of bottlenecks.
Additionally, Pfizer’s team can gather insights on process performance, identify areas for improvement, and ensure batch quality and compliance with regulatory standards.
Leveraging the scalability and flexibility of AVEVA’s software, Pfizer exceeded expectations and delivered an unprecedented 3.2 billion doses of the vaccine by the end of 2021.
Transforming medicine manufacturing
By putting industrial intelligence to work, Pfizer maximizes the benefits of advanced data management and analytics.
Harnessing data to accelerate vaccine development has the potential to save millions and restore hope during global crises.
And centralizing data, standardizing processes, and leveraging predictive analytics can streamline operations, reduce time-to-market, and improve the efficacy and safety of medications.
By bringing it up to the global historian, and structuring it in a consistent fashion, suddenly we were able to leverage our SMEs throughout the world.
