Recently at AVEVA World, attendees from across industries and continents gathered to choose the winner of AVEVA’s Sustainable Impact Award. The award recognizes customers who exemplify the height of what's possible when industrial intelligence meets genuine sustainability ambition.
This year, AVEVA’s own expert judging panel selected three finalists who are tackling some of today’s most pressing industrial and societal challenges: decarbonizing the materials inside EV batteries, keeping renewable energy reliably on the grid, and reimagining how underserved communities access clean water and sanitation.

This year’s finalists
Vianode and Goodtech
Foundational to both electric vehicles and renewable energy storage, batteries will be one of the key enabling technologies of a net-zero future. Battery production, however, carries a hefty carbon footprint of its own. Synthetic graphite in particular—an essential component of EV batteries—is responsible for about 20% of the total emissions of every battery made. That’s what leading synthetic graphite producer Vianode set out to change.
In partnership with Goodtech, Vianode deployed a data-driven production environment built on AVEVA solutions to unite its graphite production operations. The new system enables remote monitoring and real-time process control as well as automated sustainability data capture. In all, Vianode reduced the carbon footprint of its graphite to 1.9kg CO₂e/kg, a remarkable 90% below conventional production. By the time it reaches industrial scale in 2030, Vianode projects an annual reduction of around 2.3M tons of CO₂e.
Enel Green Power
Renewable energy is only as valuable as it is reliable. When a wind turbine or geothermal unit goes offline unexpectedly, grids often fall back on replacement power from less efficient, higher-emission sources. That backup cost, measured in both lost generation and added carbon, is one Enel is working harder and smarter to avoid.
Enel Green Power is one of the world’s largest renewable energy operators, and it’s using AVEVA PI System and AVEVA Predictive Analytics to remotely monitor 84 generation units across three countries. Its predictive approach detects potential failures before they happen, keeping clean generation online and avoiding the emissions that come with replacement power. Over a 24-month period, the approach identified 143 failure cases, avoiding 1.2 TWh of lost energy generation and preventing 54.7 kilotons of CO₂e in emissions.

Calcamite and 4Sight Operational Technologies
Conventional wastewater systems rely on vast networks of pipes and pumping stations to transport wastewater to faraway treatment facilities. These sprawling systems are energy-intensive, carbon-intensive, and they’re enormously expensive to build and expand. For rural and remote communities, that cost threatens to place modern sanitation infrastructure out of reach. Decentralized wastewater treatment, however, offers a different approach: treating water locally, close to where it is generated, returning it safely to the local water cycle, and recovering valuable nutrients in the process. That’s Calcamite’s specialty.
Working with 4Sight Operational Technologies, Calcamite, a South African water and sanitation company, deployed a suite of AVEVA solutions on CONNECT to enable remote monitoring and unified operational oversight across decentralized wastewater treatment plants in off-grid locations throughout Africa. In one pilot deployment at a remote nature reserve without access to a central sewage network, the system treats 15 m³ of wastewater per day—nearly 4,000 gallons—making treated effluent safe to reuse for irrigation.
In the next five years, Calcamite plans to scale to 1,000 additional sites. By combining localized biological treatment with real-time operational visibility, Calcamite is making decentralized sanitation infrastructure more scalable, sustainable, and practical for underserved communities.

Each of these projects comes from different industries and countries, and each is achieved through different approaches, but all illustrate the same crucial lesson: working toward a net-zero future doesn’t mean choosing progress tomorrow over performance today. With the right data-driven tools, strategy, and the right partners, we can choose both.
