Building a greener future with intelligent analytics
Enel is the world’s largest private renewable energy operator and power distribution company. With operations in 31 countries and on five continents, it brings energy and services to more than 55.4 million households and businesses. Because of its large fleets of diversified power generation assets—all of which produce a tremendous amount of data—Enel is constantly looking for new solutions to extract more value from its data. So, Enel harnessed its AVEVA portfolio, from edge data capture solutions to predictive analytics, to optimize the reliability and performance of its assets, cut greenhouse emissions and operate more sustainably.
As an AVEVA customer for many years, Enel’s needs have evolved along with its suite of solutions. By harnessing predictive analytics, industrial AI and scalable cloud-based solutions, Enel is making better, more sustainable operational and business decisions.

Challenges
Cut greenhouse gas emissions by reducing emissions-intensive backup power
Maximize the availability and efficiency of all assets, catch potential failures before they happen and reduce maintenance costs
Extract value from all data across the enterprise, including smaller and more remote assets, without overloading the existing data infrastructure
Results
461
failures prevented and €47M estimated losses avoided through the remote predictive diagnostic center
410,000
estimated tCO2e reduced over 24 months from thermal fleet catches—equivalent to 95,635 gas-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year
4,800
estimated tCO2e per year reduced from geothermal fleet catches—equivalent to 1,000 homes’ electricity use for one year
Solution
Deployed a suite of AVEVA solutions, including AVEVA™ PI System™, AVEVA™ Predictive Analytics, AVEVA™ Edge Data Store and CONNECT data services to streamline maintenance, optimize assets and operate more sustainably
If we were acquiring all of this data through the standard channels, we would probably overload our networks. Using AVEVA’s edge solution allows us to get that data without overloading the existing infrastructure.
Enel adopted AVEVA APM to drive its autonomous plant vision. This enabled Enel’s teams to pivot overnight to work from home when the pandemic struck Italy, ensuring the resiliency and continued, sustainable delivery of these critical services for the wider community.
As its operation expanded, Enel faced new challenges. New plants meant new data and new demands on Enel’s existing data infrastructure. Enel used AVEVA’s cloud-based solutions to avoid overloading its data network. It expanded its data analysis capabilities and gained new insights, allowing for fast, impactful decision-making enterprise-wide.
