The future of marine will be connected

Across shipbuilding, offshore operations, and maritime infrastructure, organizations are facing mounting pressure to modernize operations, improve efficiency, strengthen sustainability efforts, and navigate increasing project complexity with less resources and time than ever. Digitalization is accelerating rapidly across every segment of the industry, yet amid this momentum, one important question continues to surface:

That is why it was so important for us to bring together the global marine community during the Marine Community Sessions at AVEVA World, where we shared AVEVA’s marine vision for enabling a connected marine ecosystem through the power of the digital thread.

Throughout the sessions, attendees were taken through AVEVA’s complete lifecycle coverage for marine digitalization, from design and engineering, through construction and fabrication, and ultimately into operations and through-life support. More importantly, customers from across the industry demonstrated how AVEVA is delivering tangible operational value in real-world environments.
The conversations reinforced a clear industry shift: the future of marine transformation will not be defined by isolated digital initiatives, but by connected ecosystems that unite data and processes, so teams can collaborate seamlessly across the lifecycle.

One example came from Hakodate Dock Co., who shared how they are transforming electrical engineering efficiency by moving away from disconnected and highly manual workflows toward a fully integrated engineering environment using AVEVATM Engineering and AVEVATM E3D Design.

Previously, electrical diagrams were created independently in Microsoft Visio, cable tray layouts were managed separately in 2D CAD environments, and cable lengths were calculated manually, creating significant engineering effort and limiting collaboration across disciplines. By integrating these workflows into a connected engineering environment, Hakodate Dock is streamlining coordination, improving engineering quality, and significantly reducing manual workload across electrical design processes.

The value of connected engineering data extending into fabrication was further demonstrated by Helsinki Shipyard, who showcased how they are industrializing highly customized pipe spool fabrication through a data-driven workflow powered by PipeCloud and AVEVA E3D Design.

Using PCF exports directly from AVEVA E3D Design, engineering information is transformed into actionable manufacturing intelligence, enabling automated work effort calculations, CNC program generation, production planning, and real-time progress tracking. The solution also incorporates optimized cut nesting and smart remnant management, helping reduce material waste while improving traceability and fabrication efficiency.

Helsinki Shipyard’s presentation highlighted how the digital thread can move beyond engineering to drive measurable optimization within production environments.

The importance of structured lifecycle information management was also reinforced by Saab Naval, who presented their information-driven product model approach using AVEVA Engineering and AVEVA E3D Design.

Using a standardized Product Breakdown Structure (PBS), Saab Naval has created a consistent approach to managing information across design and production, and throughout operations, for complex naval and NATO-aligned programs. By creating greater consistency across information management processes, the company is enabling better collaboration among teams, improving traceability, and ensuring critical information remains accessible throughout highly sophisticated defence projects.

Saab Naval’s session demonstrated how connected information practices are becoming increasingly important for managing complexity, improving efficiency, and supporting long-term program success across modern naval programs.

Beyond design and construction, the sessions finished at the final stage of the lifecycle, ship operations, and how the digital thread is transforming operational performance.

BRAVA Energia shared how they are advancing offshore operational excellence through an integrated digital transformation framework combining the AVEVAä PI Systemä ,  Technomar’s T2S monitoring platform, and the EDTOOLS engineering analysis suite. CONNECT to coordinate resources.

Using the AVEVA PI System as a centralized operational data hub, BRAVA is enabling real-time visualization, analytics, and collaboration between offshore and onshore teams. By combining advanced simulation capabilities and engineering analysis tools, the organization is integrating real-time and predictive operational data across drilling, logistics, and offloading activities. Building on stakeholders’ information infrastructures, teams collaborate through CONNECT to coordinate resources.

The outcome is improved operational decision-making, enhanced safety, and greater efficiency across complex offshore operations.

Collectively, these stories illustrate a broader transformation taking place across the marine industry.

Whether improving engineering efficiency, optimizing fabrication workflows, standardizing lifecycle information management, or enhancing offshore operational visibility, the common denominator is the ability to connect information across the lifecycle through a unified digital foundation.

That is where digitalization begins to move beyond technology adoption and starts delivering measurable operational value.
